Ollama can run a model locally—but check which model your app actually uses
The project offers local and cloud routes, a command-line interface and an API. Where inference happens matters more than the app's label.

In this article
Ollama provides a way to run and connect applications to language models. Its official repository documents installation options for macOS, Windows and Linux, alongside an API and Python and JavaScript libraries.
For a developer, that creates a useful separation: an application can talk to a model service instead of embedding all the model-running logic itself. The repository's API example sends a chat request to a local endpoint.
Local and cloud are different choices
The project now describes access to models locally or in the cloud. Installing Ollama therefore does not, by itself, establish that every model request stays on your computer. Check the selected model, endpoint and application's configuration before sending sensitive material.
An interface is not a quality guarantee
Ollama's MIT licence covers the project; individual models can have their own requirements and terms. The fact that a model can be selected is not evidence that it will meet a particular accuracy or performance target.
This is a tool explainer based on documentation checked on 16 October 2026, not a launch announcement. Auratro has not independently benchmarked these configurations.
